Bexley
allotments - Stable Meadows, Foots Cray
Stable Meadows is situated in attractive Foots Cray Meadows, has good quality well drained soil and is something of a sun trap. Secure car parking. Being away from houses it is quiet and not subject to vandalism. With the current interest in organic healthy food there has been an upsurge in interest in allotments and several new gardeners have taken up the challenge of growing food there, however a few plots are still vacant for anyone with a few hours to spend each week. I started in 2001 with no experience of vegetable growing and got some good crops the first year. since then I have been self sufficient for most of the year in root vegetables and fresh herbs and through the summer in soft fruit. The bumper harvest of strawberries in 2003 has been a high spot as has been having globe artichokes available in profusion during early summer. Next season I am looking forward to harvesting my first asparagus (from seed). There's nothing quite like the day your take home your first load of home grown food! MJR 2004 |
